First Virtual Life© is Mine!

Posted by Ethos Erlanger on October 4, 2009

I hope you do not mind, but I will copyright this phrase to keep it out of the clutches of the Old Virtual World.

First Virtual Life© is now the exclusive property of Ethos Erlanger.

I hope we can all agree that this is important stuff.

Enjoy your Virtual Life© (I Said It First)

Look for my Virtual Building Blog

Posted by Ethos Erlanger on October 3, 2009

I expect Linden Lab to ask me to change my blog address because it had an “S” and an “L” in front of the word “builder”.

So, here I am starting a new blog that will use none of those two letters if it can be avoided. Look for Ethos Erlanger’s Virtual Building Blog.

We may not be able to use VW to refer to Virtual Worlds either. I expect to hear from Volkswagen about that one too.

I am hereby coining the words “First Virtual World” and the letters FVW to be used as my own, with exclusive rights. In otherwords, I have just copyrighted these two terms. You may see me use it liberally (or not. As I choose.) I intend it to mean the preferred place to be when I am in my full virtual glory. This may not be in “their” virtual region, or it might be, but it may become a generic term for the place I choose at the time.  Almost like the term “Home”. Gee, I wish I had copyrighted that word. It has a warm ring to it.

Now. On to other world!

Enjoy your Virtual Life.

The Viewer Makes the Difference When Uploading Sculpty Bitmaps

Posted by Ethos Erlanger on August 3, 2009

I did a rather detailed test of an upload of a cylindrical sculpty and the results were quite different between the SL viewer and the Meerkat viewer. This was totally unexpected.  I will show photos later of the two different uploads and the resulting prims, but I am interested if any other users have experienced this.

The CONSTANTS are:

Open Sim in Local Sandbox Mode

the bitmap image file that was exported from Wings 3D

The VARIABLES are:

Meerkat Viewer used to upload the image

SL Viewer used to upload the image

Crosscheck used:

Both viewers display the same image of the best sculpty or the inferior sculpty.

I expect the results to be reproducible by other users.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Looking for an On-Line University That Offers a Degree in Architecture

Posted by Ethos Erlanger on July 27, 2009

Why not?

I’ll take the courses, and the test.  I’ll become a real architect. Is there such a thing out there?

I Have Started the Washington Monument in My Sandbox

Posted by Ethos Erlanger on July 22, 2009

The incomplete Washington Monument in front of a photo of the St louis Arch

The incomplete Washington Monument in front of a photo of the St louis Arch

I started this version of the Washington Monument in Second Life.  I did complete one version that is 88 meters tall in SL and displayed at Shakker Park, this one that you see in the photo above is in my local OpenSim sandbox. Built according to the Erlanger Scale, The top of this monument is 278 meters above the ground and when it is completed, it will use more than 400 prims in Second Life.  If Second Life allowed prims larger than 10×10 meters it could be build with only 17 prims.  Large monumental builds that are a true scale recreation are rare in Second Life because of the prim size limitation.

Using the Erlanger Scale, the base of this monument is 27 meters square.

Pondering how to build the St Louis Arch in OpenSim or Second Life

Posted by Ethos Erlanger on July 20, 2009

I am starting to play in my sandbox with a grandiose idea. The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial.

Jefferson National Expansion Memorial at Erlanger Acres_001

To do this build at the proper scale I must build it 315 meters tall and 315 meters wide at the base. This is an image of my entire 256m x 256m sim and at the center is the Little Sable Point Lighthouse which is about 54 meters tall. On the right, partially hidden by the photo of the arch and trees, is a triangular prim that represents the base of the arch which will be a 27 meters equilateral triangle.

Meerkat will only take standard size prims to OpenSim

Posted by Ethos Erlanger on July 15, 2009

I tried to bring my lighthouse into my OpenSim sandbox and parts are missing.

The megaprims that I used for the foundation and the light beam are gone. I will have to remake those.  The script inside the rotating Fresnel lens is gone. I will have to rewrite that script. We still have a long way to go for OpenSim to play nice with Second Life.

I am not asking that they be the same.  I just want them to get along.

I also tried to bring over a boxed product using Meerkat. Nothing in the contents of the box was there when it got to OpenSim. I think that Second Inventory will still be a viable solution for a while longer.

One Prim takes a Trip on the Meerkat Express

Posted by Ethos Erlanger on July 12, 2009

Thanks to the Meerkat viewer, I was able to take a prim out of Second Life and then import him into my OpenSim local sandbox. And, just to make the prim feel at home, I took him back to Second life where he came from.

When he got home, the prim remarked “That was quite an experience!”

We hope to make regular shuttle stops between the two virtual worlds in the future. It must be noted though that these are not non-stop trips. There is a short layover on my PC’s desktop.
